Xavier Becerra, a former California attorney general and Biden administration Cabinet member, will move on from the June gubernatorial primary. His campaign gained ground after Eric Swalwell left the race in April, and he drew major Democratic support in the final stretch.

Becerra held 26.7% of the statewide vote as of Friday evening, narrowly ahead of Republican Steve Hilton at 26.4%. Tom Steyer trailed at 21%, making the November contest likely to be Becerra against Hilton for a race that will shape state policy for Bay Area voters.
