Oakland coal terminal gets $75 million in federal funding

President Donald Trump directed $75 million toward a long delayed coal export terminal planned for the former Oakland Army Base. The project could begin construction this summer, with shipments expected in 2028.

The Oakland funding is part of a $700 million federal coal package covering 13 projects across the country. The administration says the West Oakland terminal would operate around the clock and create more than 1,400 on site jobs while moving coal from states such as Utah and Wyoming to overseas markets.

The project has faced nearly a decade of lawsuits and opposition over coal dust and Oakland's role in fossil fuel shipping. A 2023 California Supreme Court ruling blocked the city from applying its later coal ban to the already approved terminal, while opponents are still seeking tighter air district controls.
