San Francisco expands drone and camera use against illegal dumping
San Francisco supervisors approved new surveillance rules allowing Public Works to use drones and a camera system tied to license plate readers for illegal dumping cases. A separate proposal would raise fines beyond the current $1,000 cap.

San Francisco Public Works can now use drones to look for illegal dumping and help identify who is responsible. Supervisors also approved a camera system that pairs automatic license plate readers with movable cameras placed around the city.
District 3 Supervisor Danny Sauter introduced a separate ordinance Tuesday to increase fines for illegal dumping, saying cleanup costs for hazardous waste, construction debris, industrial material and bulky items can exceed current penalties. A hearing on the issue is expected in July, with Chinatown, the Financial District, Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, Union Square and Bayview among areas highlighted in city discussions.
